What to know before you go
Check the season before choosing your travel dates. Ask about licensed operation, vessel capacity and safety equipment. Tell the organiser if you are prone to seasickness. Check whether Cayo Levantado is a separate add-on or included stop.
Choose the travel window first
Whale watching should not be treated as a year-round Samaná activity. The Ministry of Tourism describes a season from January 15 to March 30; the current season’s operating rules and departures still need confirmation. Outside the operating window, consider Los Haitises or an island outing instead.
Responsible viewing is part of the product
Ask how the operator follows the applicable sanctuary rules, how the boat approaches animals and what safety briefing is provided. A responsible excursion observes wild behaviour and follows the captain’s decisions. Do not select a trip on a promise to touch, swim with or guarantee an encounter with whales.
Comfort on the bay
Time on open water can feel very different from a sheltered beach crossing. Ask about vessel size, seating, shade, toilets and life jackets. Discuss seasickness concerns with a qualified health professional if necessary. Share children’s ages and mobility needs before confirming the trip.
Whales plus Cayo Levantado
Combination packages can add an island stop after time on the bay. Confirm the whale-viewing component, beach time, meal arrangements and return harbour independently. A longer package is not automatically more time observing whales.
